When and how to watch Kings at NBA All-Star weekend in Utah

The who, what, where and when of All-Star weekend

The anticipation is over. We have reached All-Star weekend and the Kings are all over the event. From the Risings Stars Challenge to the 3-point Shootout and the main event, Sacramento will have someone to cheer for throughout the weekend.

For one of the few times in recent memory, the Kings had a couple of extra days off before a group made their way to Salt Lake City, Utah. This is an excellent time for the team to take a break, reflect on a wild first 57 games and mentally prepare for the 25 game sprint to the finish line.

Here is a look at the who, what, where and when you can catch the Kings over the next three days.

Rising Stars Challenge

Keegan Murray joins a long list of Kings players who have represented Sacramento at the Jordan Rising Stars game. Murray and the rest of the rookies, sophomores and G Leaguers will take the court at 6 PM PST Friday night on TNT.

They have changed up the event, like they have done plenty of other times. Murray will play for NBA legend Pau Gasol alongside a star studded cast:

Team Pau:

  • Paolo Banchero (Magic)

  • Benedict Mathurin (Pacers)

  • Jaden Ivey (Pistons)

  • Scottie Barnes (Raptors)

  • Jose Alvarado (Pelicans)

  • Keegan Murray (Kings)

  • Andrew Nembhard (Pacers)

The plan is for four teams to play a three game mini tournament. The first round will go until one team hits the 40 point mark. Murray’s squad will face off against a team coached by former Jazz point guard Deron Williams in game 1. If they survive the opening round, they play a second game to 25 with the winner being crowned the champ.

This should be a fun event for Murray. He’s playing alongside plenty of talented young players, many of whom are known for their passing ability. He’s the best pure shooter of the group, which should help him get some open looks.

Starry 3-Point Contest

Following Friday’s festivities, the league has a busy Saturday schedule that includes the Kia Skills Challenge, the Starry 3-point contest and the AT&T Slam Dunk contest. While the Kings don’t have anyone in either the skills or dunk contests, they do have Kevin Huerter representing Sacramento in the 3-point shootout.

Huerter is joined by a fun field of shooters, including former Kings Buddy Hield and Tyrese Haliburton, as well as Damian Lillard, Jayson Tatum, Lauri Markkanen, Tyler Herro and Anfernee Simons. Simons, however, is injured and has been replaced in the shootout by the Knicks’ Julius Randle.

On the season, Huerter is knocking down 39.2 percent from 3-point range on 6.8 attempts per game. This is his first invitation to participate in the 3-point shootout.

Like the rest of All-Star Weekend, you can find the event on TNT beginning Saturday at 5:00 PM PST. The shooting will likely begin around 5:30, just after the skills challenge and before the slam dunk contest.

NBA G League Next Up Game

The NBA kicks off the Sunday festivities with the G League’s Next Up Game, which is scheduled for 12 PM PST on NBATV. Included in this contest is two-way big man Neemias Queta, who is representing both the Stockton and Sacramento Kings.

Queta has played sparingly with Sacramento this season, but he’s crushed it at the G League level, averaging 18.4 points, 8.4 rebounds, three assists and 1.9 blocks per game. He has helped lead Stockton to a 14-6 record so far on the season, which is good enough for second place in the G League’s Western Conference.

The 7-footer out of Portugal is set to suit up for Team Scoot at the Next Up game. He’ll likely see plenty of action against players like Luka Garza and Shareef O’Niel on Team Luka.

2022-23 NBA All-Star Game

Sunday afternoon is the moment that Kings fans have been waiting for. Both Domantas Sabonis and De’Aaron Fox will represent Sacramento as part of the 72nd NBA All-Star game that is set to tip off at 5:30 PM PST on TNT.

Both are reserves for the game, and at this point we don’t know which team they will play for, be it Team LeBron or Team Giannis. At 4:30 PM PST, the two captains will select teams, which is also available on TNT.

This is a great opportunity for both Fox and Sabonis to get national exposure. The duo have led the Kings to the third best record in the Western Conference at this point in the season and both are deserving of the invitation.

For Sabonis, this is his third All-Star invitation, with two coming during his time in Indiana. This is the first invite for Fox, who has played his entire six-year career in Sacramento. It’s also the first time the Kings have had two representatives in the All-Star game since the 2002-03 season when Peja Stojakovic and Brad Miller both made the squad.
