Play on the peripheral.

Kings general manager Monte McNair has a difficult task in front of him. The Feb. 9 trade deadline is quickly approaching and while his team is sitting in third place in the Western Conference standings, there are clear issues with his roster that need to be addressed.

Walking a tightrope, McNair needs to balance the delicate chemistry of the team with the reality that more length, depth and defense is needed. He also has the issue that the cupboards are pretty bare when it comes to assets, and any move he makes has to come with the understanding of long term roster construction.

Can the Kings afford to take on a contract like the Atlanta Hawks’ John Collins? The answer is yes, they can assemble a package built around expiring contracts and maybe a veteran like Richaun Holmes to make the money work. But this isn’t the trade machine. Forget Collins the player, Collins the contract is three years at somewhere around $78.5 million after this season.

Is this the type of swing that McNair should be taking? How would this contract impact the rest of the roster in a year or two or even three? Is Collins the piece that puts the Kings over the top or just another hungry mouth to feed on the offensive end?
