The Sacramento Kings opened the 2023-24 campaign with media day on Monday, followed by training camp on Tuesday. Basketball season has officially begun.

For people who cover the NBA, media day is the equivalent of the first day of school. Everyone is dressed in their newest looks and the players, like your teachers from grade school, want nothing more than for the final bell to ring and to get the hell out of the building.

It’s a necessary evil, but it also comes with some intrigue. This is the first chance to see this specific group of players as a collective. There are new faces, but also a lot of familiar ones with the Kings bringing back a good portion of their roster.

Here are a few highlights from the day.

The Mission

The Kings walked into last season with some lofty goals. It wasn’t just to make the playoffs, they wanted to make noise. A first round out may not have been what the team had hoped for, but a seven game series against the Golden State Warriors was an incredible learning experience.

According to head coach Mike Brown, the Kings aren’t satisfied with just being a playoff team. They believe they have what it takes to be a contender and they aren’t shying away from that goal.

“There are a lot of ‘expectations’ out there,” Mike Brown told The Kings Beat. “The reality of it is that, those expectations don’t exceed ours. Our (expectations) are to compete for a championship. We feel like we have the room to get it done, but we know how hard it is.”
